There was some doubt about the favourite prior to the start as it drifted in the betting. As the lag fell it was Lord Chester who cut out the early pace from Cayenne and Butterfly, but the leader was in trouble after half a mile. Round the final bend Butterfly took up the running, closely followed by Telescope and Sir Visto, and this order remained until 2 furlongs out. At the distance a good battle ensued between Sir Visto and Telescope, with the former getting home by 3 parts of a length in 3 minutes 18.4 seconds, while Butterfly was a bad third. The winner won the Epsom Derby and St Leger, but in a career consisting of 13 races he only won 3 and it was generally believed that he was towards the front of a poor generation of horses. This was confirmed when Matthew dawson claimed that he was inferior to Ladas. | Over Round 102% |
